Franklin Method Private Sessions for Musicians

Perfect for students, amateurs, and professional musicians who want to relieve pain and tension, play with more ease and efficiency, and improve their body awareness.

Healthy Playing From the Inside-Out

Explore the power of embodied music-making!

In a 1 hour private Franklin Method session, we’ll analyze your playing using videotape and kinesthetic feedback and identify 1-2 goals to work on during our time together.

We focus on body alignment, reducing muscle tension, or work with the movement patterns underlying instrumental technique through the process of anatomical embodiment. Essentially, we learn how our bodies function and experience that using imagery, proprioception, and gentle movement. Appropriate Franklin Method ball and band exercises may be used to reduce excess tension, promote flexibility and joint function, or improve strength.

Putting the Franklin Method to Practice

Once you’ve experienced an anatomical embodiment, you can incorporate it into your music practice and daily life. Notice how using imagery affects the way you move and play your instrument–you might feel it is more dynamic and efficient!

Franklin Method exercises can be used therapeutically or as pre-performance warmups and cooldowns.

Love exercising or practicing yoga? Working with a somatic movement specialist or a physical therapist? The Franklin Method readily complements and supports your existing movement practices.

IN-PERSON (LYNNWOOD, WASHINGTON)

SESSION OPTIONS

Experience the Franklin Method in person! Bring your instrument (if possible) and wear comfortable clothes for moving and lying on the floor. Franklin Method equipment and mats are available for use in-studio.

The Franklin Method works wonderfully online with a little preparation! You’ll receive a list of instructions for setting up your space and required equipment (including easy alternatives to Franklin Method balls and bands). To facilitate playing analysis, you’ll be asked to upload a brief video of you playing from three different angles at least 3-5 days before your session.

FAQS

Check out the frequently asked questions below, or contact me with any further questions!

Franklin Method private sessions help you address your specific musical and wellness goals. We’ll analyze your playing and focus on anatomical embodiments that best fit your needs. Franklin Method workshops have a predetermined theme or anatomical focus and, unless otherwise stated, don’t generally include time to play your instrument. If you’ve never experienced the Franklin Method before, a workshop can be a fantastic and affordable way to see if it would be a good fit for you! If you want to explore your movement patterns and playing more deeply, try a private session!

It’s up to you! Each Franklin Method session focuses on a specific concept and equips you with exercises and embodiments you can practice while playing and in daily life. You might be happy with one session or you might want to explore more of the body over several sessions. Multiple sessions can build on each other to address larger underlying movement concerns.

Some Franklin Method exercises and embodiments have an immediate effect on your muscle tone, tension levels, and mobility. These are great before, during, and after playing/exercising. Other exercises and embodiments take time and regular practice to see lasting changes in your nervous system. Just like any other habit, they take intentional repetition to become part of your routine!

While we use Franklin Method balls and bands during in-person sessions, I’ll provide a list of appropriate substitutions for props at home (I.e., a rolled up bath towel) and how to set up your space for online sessions. You can also also purchase Franklin Method equipment at OPTP.com (not an affiliate link).

I work with all instruments and am comfortable addressing aspects of posture, body alignment, and arm/shoulder issues. However, there are Franklin Method Educators who specialize in voice and wind performance who can address more specific technical concerns for your instrument. I recommend reaching out to Dr. Stacey Mastrian (voice) and Ruth Kasckow (flute, winds, voice).
