Lesson Inquiry Form

Hi, I’m Dr. Erika Burns!

I love helping students become creative and confident musicians.

I picked up the violin when I was 4 years old and never looked back–receiving my bachelor’s degree from Western Washington University and my master’s and doctoral degrees in violin performance from the University of Oklahoma. My struggles with injuries led me to get certified as a Franklin Method Educator, and I regularly incorporate anatomy and biomechanics into lessons to help you play with more ease.

I can’t wait to explore the violin with you!

Frequently Asked Questions

Erika uses the online system Fons, which accepts credit card and ACH bank transfer payments. Once you have submitted your lesson registration form, Erika will help you set up your Fons account. Fons will automatically charge your preferred payment method on the 1st of the month beginning September 1st. Your last payment will be charged on June 1st.

Yes, absolutely! If you are interested in starting in the middle of a month, go ahead and fill out the lesson inquiry form. Once you've decided to register for lessons, you will be charged a prorated amount based on the number of lessons you will take in the initial month. On the 1st day of the following month, Fons will begin to charge your automatic monthly rate.

No, Erika only offers regular lessons Monday through Friday. The Evergreen Music Collective will host recitals, group classes, and other events on select weekends throughout the year.

There are no refunds available for missed or cancelled lessons. Erika’s happy to reschedule or offer a makeup lesson as the schedule allows. Designated makeup days are also offered throughout the school year and before the summer break.

Erika also offers a video exchange option for makeup lessons. You can send several short videos of your practice or performance, and Erika will provide feedback in the form of video tutorials, sheet music annotations, and/or written commentary.

The Evergreen Music Collective is located on the bottom floor of the Castle Building (19730 64th Ave W STE 101 Lynnwood, WA 98036.) Parking is available in the front and side of the building. Erika will provide you with an electronic door code to enter the Castle Building.

Unfortunately, Erika doesn't make house calls. If traffic and transportation is a barrier to working with Erika, online lessons might be a good choice.

Many families who take lessons at the Evergreen Music Collective like to take advantage of its proximity to Trader Joe’s, LA Fitness, and Lynnwood Crossroads shopping center. (T&T Supermarket is set to open across the street in Fall 2025!)

It is better to rent your violin for the first year or more, especially if you need a smaller violin. (Violins come in a wide range of sizes!) Amazon violins are usually not good investments due to poor sound quality and construction. Erika is happy to provide a list of local violin shops to rent a violin. They’ll help you figure out the correct size and accessories!

(Occasionally, Erika will suggest changing sizes if the student’s arms and/or hands are too small. We want a good ergonomic fit to prevent aches and pain!)

You need to bring a working violin, shoulder rest/sponge, music, and lesson notebook.
Erika will provide you with an initial binder and a lesson notebook/practice sheets.

Please bring your binder and notebook to each lesson! You are welcome to record lessons for review during the week.

Some handouts for some technical exercises and repertoire will be provided by Erika. You will be asked to purchase certain method books and sheet music to respect copyright law.

At the beginning, it’s best to practice 15-20 minutes five to six days per week. As you advance, more practice time will be necessary and/or beneficial! Intermediate to advanced students tend to spend 1-3 hours per practice day depending on their goals and work load.

Absolutely! While it can feel more physically challenging to start as an adult beginner, you understand concepts more quickly and thoroughly. Erika tailors her technical sequencing to accommodate your musical interests and ability to practice.

Looking for community, support, and solidarity in your musical journey? The Evergreen Music Collective also offers multiple group classes for adult students throughout the academic year!

In beginner violin lessons, we start with learning healthy posture/alignment, basic left and right-hand techniques, and how to make a beautiful sound. You’ll learn how to play in-tune with good rhythm and expression, how to read music, and introductory music theory and aural skills.

We learn techniques sequentially at your pace so you don’t feel so overwhelmed. For example, right and left-hand techniques are learned separately and then integrated over the first few weeks of lessons.

You’ll put all these concepts into practice through short musical pieces and folk/fiddle tunes.

In your first lesson, I’ll ask you to play a little for me. You can play anything you’re comfortable with, such as a scale, etude/caprice, or solo piece. I like to work collaboratively with students–I’ll always ask you what you felt were the positive aspects of your performance (i.e. what went well, what you were proud of, or what you were relieved by) and what made you feel less comfortable or less confident. Your feedback helps inform our technical and musical work in each lesson!

Once we identify some areas of growth and goals for violin lessons, I’ll assign you related technical exercises, etudes/caprices, and/or solo pieces. These are designed to sequentially improve your technique and musicality. We also learn a variety of problem-solving strategies and musicians’ wellness tips to use in your home practice.

Erika utilizes both the Suzuki method and traditional violin repertoire to meet individual students’ needs and interests. While Erika is a certified Suzuki teacher (as of August 11th), Erika believes in studying a variety of approaches to violin playing and additionally draws from Mimi Zweig Pedagogy and numerous other pedagogues including Paul Rolland, Simon Fischer, and Ivan Galamian.

Erika incorporates traditional fiddle tunes into lessons for beginning students and group class ensembles. If you would like to primarily focus on fiddle repertoire, consider checking out lessons with Brandon Vance. Brandon is a professional fiddler and also teaches at the Evergreen Music Collective.

To help create a safe environment for your child to learn, Erika requires a parent/guardian of preschool and elementary-aged students to attend lessons. Parents of teenagers are welcome to attend lessons or wait in the lobby.

While Erika will provide practice objectives during the lesson, it is helpful to take additional notes for reference during the week.

Young beginners also feel more confident in their skills and make progress more easily when their parents/guardians help with at-home practice!

Masking is encouraged but not required at this time. Erika asks that anyone who is ill or exposed to someone with a viral infection wear a mask to lessons and reserves the right to reinstate mask requirements when public safety advisories are in place.

To reduce the chance of viral infections, Erika runs multiple Corsi-Rosenthal box air purifiers in the studio to improve air quality and has disposable masks available as needed. Please note that Erika is vaccinated and wears a mask due to personal health concerns.
